Editor’s Note: You didn’t miss the January 2007 issue of the newsletter because it was not written ... due to many reasons. February’s issue was delayed because of computer problems. Maryland Right to Life Maryland Right to Life candlelight march will be held on Monday March 6th. Assemble at St. Mary’s Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis. March starts at 6:30pm and proceeds to the State Capitol. The Maryland General Assembly meets every Monday evening while they are in session to allow citizens to meet their representatives. Just a reminder: The Right to Life cause is reverence and dignity from cradle to grave. It is also taking a perspective of ethics of the new science of cloning and stem cell research. If you cannot attend, you can write a letter indicating your preferences to your State Legislators. SHROVE TUESDAY’S PANCAKE DINNER The tradition continues. Come and enjoy the final repast before the Lenten Fast. Dinner starts at 6pm in the Church’s lower hall. Menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage or bacon and a heavy dose of humility, penance and thanksgiving. If you would care to help, please call either Bob Powers (301.782.2939) or PGK Ken Muir (301.952.0665). There is NO CHARGE for this dinner and the family is invited. Welcome to the Council The Council is enriched by the admission of four new members. Jeff Koscho, Larry Perkins and Andrew Wrenn have taken their First Degrees and John Franke has transferred into our Council. Please attend a meeting to meet your “new” Brother Knights.
“Boys’ Night Out”
Starting with the January meetings, our Council has decided that the second meeting of each month should be a true social meeting. A short business meeting will be followed by great refreshments and a social time for Brother Knights to gather for friendship and fraternity. Board games, card games and just “plain talk” discussions will follow the refreshments. If you have an activity in which we can participate, please bring it with you.
We also entertaining the idea of the Council sponsoring a “Girls’ Night Out”. If you or your better half have suggestions as to this activity, please contact any officer of the Council with the details. It could be held at anytime or any place that is suitable.
If you or your better half have a suggestion regarding the members attending a play, recital, dinner theater, horse race, trip to the casinos, etc. (we have definite feelings regarding the Hanger Club), please contact any Council Officer with the details.
Annual Chili Cook Off
Only four members brought their culinary efforts to the January 16th meeting to be cajoled by their Brother Knights. The fierce tasting and judging by an expert panel of critics resulted with PGK Dobson, PGK Faust and GK Perez enduring the humiliation of placing second to PGK Muir. This competition was extended to the other Councils in our District, but it appears there was no one who felt capable to prepare a competitive concoction and defeat our group. If you have the desire to display your culinary expertise next year, put a note on your calendar that at the second meeting in January, we will have Pepto Bismol and Rolaids available for all who attend.
St. John’s Men’s Retreat at Loyola Retreat House On the weekend of January 26 – 28, 2007 members of our Knights of Columbus Council 11171 joined with the men from St. John the Evangelist Church Clinton, St. Mary’s Church Piscataway, and St. Michael’s Church in Annandale, Virginia for a two day spiritual reflection with Our Lord guided by the theme “The Mystery of the Church in the 21st Century”. There were many lecture lessons offered to help interpret and explain the meaning of being One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic; the four marks of our Church. There was time provided for quiet reflection while walking the scenic grounds of the Retreat Center. The food and accommodations were outstanding as usual. A weekend of good fellowship was provided to all who attended.
CONFIRMATION CLASS RECEIVES BIBLES The Knights of Columbus, St. John the Evangelist Council 11171 of Clinton, Maryland donated funds for the purchase of 40 Bibles for the 2007 Confirmation Class of St. John the Evangelist Parish.
The Knights are working with the Youth Ministry of the parish to instruct and provide guidance for the youths to become Soldiers of Christ through Confirmation. On the first night of the annual weekend Confirmation Retreat held this year on January 19&20, 2007, the candidates for Confirmation received their Bibles during a candlelight prayer service held in the chapel at the Mattaponi Retreat Center in Croom, Maryland. For most of our youths, this is the first time they have received their very own study Bible engraved with their name and they were greatly impressed.
